IS THERE A TRAVEL BAN IN CHEEKTOWAGA

Cheektowaga is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The town is in the north-central part of the county, and is an inner ring suburb of Buffalo.

The town is the second-largest suburb of Buffalo, after the Town of Amherst and it borders Lancaster on the east, West Seneca on the south, the city of Buffalo on the west, and on the north by Amherst. With an average high-temperature of 29.3°F (-1.5°C) and an average low-temperature of 18.7°F (7.4°C), January is the coldest month in Cheektowaga. It a famous city known for its beautiful Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve. It is a creekside preserve, perfect for hiking and admiring the beauty of nature.  As of the 2020 census, the town has grown to a population of 89,877.

A driving ban was in place for Buffalo, Amherst, Lackawanna, Cheektowaga, Clarence and Hamburg, as of 3 p.m. on December 26, 2022. On December 27, 2022, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz wrote in a statement: “Interstates I-90, I-190, & I-290 and NYS Routes 400 & 219 are now open. The I-190 entrances from I-90 will remain CLOSED. If on the I-190, please do NOT get off at exits in the City of Buffalo. Routes 33 (Kensington Expressway) and 198 (Scajaquada Expressway) are still closed.” He said for safety to citizen due to the heavy snowstorm as all the roads were blocked and this was to help citizen stay safe.

He later released a statement on December 27, 2022 saying “UPDATE: The driving ban for the City of Lackawanna has been changed to an advisory. A driving ban REMAINS IN EFFECT for the City of Buffalo.” He added, “We can announce that the driving ban has been reduced to an advisory for Cheektowaga as of 7am”.

This measure is necessary because it is dangerous to drive on, it’s also a health hazard. Heavy, wet snow has a low snow-to-liquid ratio, as low as 5-to-1, meaning for every 5 inches of snow, there is a 1-inch liquid equivalent. Mid-winter snowstorms with colder air near the surface, in the 20s or even teens, may have a snow-to-liquid ratio of 10-to-1 to as high as 20-to-1, since melting isn’t occurring before the snowflakes reach the ground.

Heavy, wet snow is sometimes referred to as “heart-attack snow.” Shoveling it can trigger heart attacks in individuals with heart problems.

This should go without saying, but any accumulating snow can lead to dangerous travel conditions due to slippery roads for vehicles and slick runways for airplanes. It’s best to stay home until the snow stops and road crews have a chance to plough or salt the roads. If you must travel, drive slowly and give yourself plenty of extra time.

But there is one good thing about heavy, wet snow: It’s great for building snowmen or having a serious snowball fight. Perhaps that’ll keep your kids occupied while you do the dirty work of shovelings.
